Kansas gets tornado coverage and thunderstorm coverage, and Sedgwick County residents hear plenty of both. Ice storms get less attention and they do a specific kind of damage to residential electrical equipment that arrives gradually and lasts longer.
Before: what ice actually does
Freezing rain accumulates on every exposed surface. On a service drop spanning a yard, that accumulation adds substantial weight to a cable designed for its own weight plus wind.
The load does not arrive suddenly. It builds over hours, and the failure comes when accumulated weight exceeds what the attachment can hold.
Trees do the rest. Ice-loaded branches break under their own weight, and the ones over service drops and distribution lines come down with them.

After: the damage that is not obvious
Service equipment that took mechanical load during the storm may look intact and be compromised.
A mast that was pulled and returned close to vertical may have damaged standoffs or conductors stressed at the weatherhead bend. A meter socket that was twisted may have lost its weather seal, admitting water that will corrode terminations over the following months.
That is the slow-motion part. The failure arrives in spring, apparently unrelated to a storm in January.
After: surge damage from restoration
Restoration itself produces transients. Reclosers operating, circuits being switched back, and equipment restarting across a region all generate voltage disturbances.
GFCI and AFCI devices are vulnerable, since they contain electronics. A device that took a transient may still latch and look normal while its trip mechanism no longer works.
Testing every GFCI and AFCI with its button after a significant outage is a fifteen-minute job across a house. Anything that will not trip on test has failed and is providing nothing.
After: the freeze-thaw sequence
Water that entered equipment during the storm freezes, expands, and works joints apart. Then it thaws and the water sits.
Outdoor equipment is where this matters: meter sockets, disconnects, exterior receptacles and any junction box on an exterior wall.
A visual check when the weather clears, looking for corrosion, staining, or covers that no longer seat properly, catches most of it.
